Many people who are considering laser hair removal know very little about the actual subject. Let me take a minute and explain exactly what laser hair removal is and how it works. There are several types of lasers used for laser hair removal and we won’t get into the specifics of the individual types of lasers but just understand that some lasers work better for some skin types than other skin types and the technician who is doing the laser hair removal will choose the type of laser that they feel is appropriate for your skin and hair type.
Laser hair removal works because light is generally absorbed by darker substances and reflected by lighter substances. Skin and hair have a chemical in them called melanin. Melanin is the chemical that gives skin pigment and hair pigment. When the technician shines the specialized laser hair removal laser on the hair follicle itself, heat is built up an absorbed in the hair follicle. A hair follicle is the mechanism that facilitates hair growth. Because the surrounding skin around the hair follicle is generally lighter in color than the melanin in the hair follicle the follicle itself absorbs the most heat. This heat damages the follicle and stunts the growth of the hair.
It’s important to note that laser hair removal would be more accurately called laser hair reduction because it doesn’t actually permanently remove the hair. It damages the follicle and slows the growing process down to almost nothing. Generally between six and eight sessions of laser hair removal are needed for the treatment to be considered successful. Patients need to wait between eight and twelve weeks between treatments to allow for healing.
Sometimes follow-up treatments are necessary if there is a particular area of skin that seems to be growing hair back faster than the other areas. Laser hair removal works best with people who have light colored skin and dark colored hair. People with dark skin like African Americans are generally not as good of candidates for laser hair removal as people with very pale skin and dark hair. Pale skin with very fine blonde hair is a poor candidate for laser hair removal as well
